Young Artists

Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre’s Young Artist Program offers education and performance experience to outstanding pre-professional singers, who are provided a performance stipend and homestay. Members of the Young Artist Program take the stage in mainstage operas as part of the opera chorus, as well as leads in Young Artist productions.

In addition, young artists participate in master classes, mock auditions, stage combat and stage make up workshops during their time in Cedar Rapids. Jon Spong, Costanza Cuccaro, Edwin Penhorwood, Karen Brunssen, Katharine Goeldner, Malcolm MacKenzie, Gerald Dolter, Sarah Fried, Paul Houghtaling, Michael Sokoloff, and Todd Thomas have presented master classes in past seasons.

Young Artists have had the opportunity to work with renowned stage directors in the context of mainstage productions. Gregory Keller, Bodo Igesz, Vince Liotta, Richard Barrett, Robert Lindsey-Nassif, Gerald Dolter, Paul Houghtaling, Carl Ratner, Michael Sokoloff, Ed Bourgeois, Mark Clark, and Noel Koran have stage directed productions for Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre.

Young Artist auditions are held every fall in various locations in the mid-west. For information on audition sites and times please check our website. While a live audition is preferred, it is not required. Young Artist applicants are invited to email an application (download link below), current resume, a high resolution headshot, and audio clip to:  jlschulte@cr-opera.org.
