Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre's Fall 2009 Production of Hans Krása's Brundibár

The Brundibár performances at CSPS are on Saturday, November 21 at 1:00PM and 3:00PM with a reception between shows.

Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre is partnering with the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, Cedar Rapids Community School District, and Eastern Iowa Arts Academy to bring the historical children's opera Brundibár to Cedar Rapids.  This opera is also made possible by our generous production sponsors, the Joan and David Thaler Holocaust Remembrance Fund, Bradley & Riley, P.C., and Ronald and Sue Reider.

Brundibár is a children's opera by Jewish Czech composer Hans Krása with a libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister.  The piece was originally performed by the children of Theresienstadt concentration camp in occupied Czechoslovakia during WWII, thus establishing this opera as historically significant. The plot involves two children, Annette and Little Joe, a fatherless sister and brother whose mother is ill.  The doctor tells the children that to get well their mother needs fresh milk, but the family has no money for this expensive medicine. Annette and Little Joe decide to sing in the marketplace to raise the money, but the evil organ grinder Brundibár chases them away. Because of the help of a fearless sparrow, keen cat, wise dog, and the children of the town, they are able to expel Brundibár and sing in the market square. The opera is structured like a fable and the lesson is how love and perseverance through community can triumph over the dark-hearted.

For additional information about the events directly surrounding the original Brundibár productions in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, there will be an adult Holocaust education class at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church - A Czech National Parish, 1224 Fifth Street SE, Cedar Rapids.  At 2:30PM there will be a tour of the church.  At 3:00PM the class will begin in the church hall.
